Grease trap
Animal and vegetable fats, oils and sludge in the sewer can have unpleasant consequences. For example, the sewage system can become clogged with all the associated consequences. Cleaning a sewer again costs a lot of money and when grease and sludge keeps getting in, the problem of blockage keeps coming back. It is therefore necessary to prevent this. This is especially important in areas where kitchens are widely used, such as restaurants, nursing homes, butchers, schools and swimming pools. It is even laid down by law in the Environmental Management Activities Decree that certain sectors must separate their waste water from fats and sludge. This can be done by installing a grease trap.
How does a grease trap work?
The operation of the grease separator is quite easy. The operation is based on gravity. The waste water that is discharged from a kitchen, for example, ends up in the separator. This separator can be in the ground, but there are also grease separators that have a free arrangement in a cellar or other room in the building. The heavier parts of the fat and oils will sink to the bottom and form a layer of sludge there. Fat itself has a lower density than water so it will float to the surface and solidify. The water is then discharged to the sewer via the outlet of the separator. Not much can go wrong during this separation process. Nevertheless, over time, the layer of sludge and the layer of fat will come closer together. There is then almost no room for the water and the current will be much slower. This is the sign that the separator needs to be cleaned. A separator can consist of different materials. If you need a large in-ground separator, it is advisable to use one made of concrete or polyethylene (PE). Diederen Afwateringstechniek can supply you with separators in all sizes. A stainless steel separator is also possible. Before purchasing a separator it is important to determine the capacity and the arrangement.
